ABOUT THE CITY

The origin of the name of the city of Potim, located in the State of São Paulo, dates back to 1782, when the chapel built by the pious couple of farmers Miguel Corrêa dos Ouros and Dona Izabel Pereira dos Ouros was blessed and made official , more specifically on  August 6th, 1782.
Miguel Corrêa dos Ouros possessed an image of the Senhor Bom Jesus, brought from Portugal, and the people of the place had a lot of devotion and attributed miracles. The couple decided to build a church to put the image and for this, made a donation of a hundred fathoms of  front land to six hundred fathoms of the backlands, as was the custom of the time, in a deed dated June 22nd, 1781, received by Father Antônio Ramos Barbasm, from the Parish of Guaratinguetá, São Paulo.
This donated area now comprises part of Antônio de Oliveira Portes and former Massaguaçu Streets, now Rua Adriano Galvão de Castro besides the center of the city, where the Matrix of Senhor Bom Jesus de Potim is built, which became the patron saint of the city .
The Chapel was built on August 6th, 1872, the first mass was held on the site, by Father Firmino Dias Xavier.
The origin of the name Potim is linked to the Nheengatu indigenous language, the general language of the Tupi-Guarani, which carries the meaning “shrimp”. It is assumed that a large number of freshwater prawns exist in the Potim river.
Initially the village that arose little by little around the Chapel, received the name of village of the Chapel of Senho Bom Jesus de Cana Verde de Ribeirão de Potim.
Population developed slowly. It has become a village of fishermen and rural workers. At the time of Brazil’s independence, the neighborhood was the largest coffee producer in Guaratinguetá.
