ABOUT THE CITY

The pilgrims might stay in a place considered sacred ground; the Shrine of the Exile.

The Sanctuary provides an insider’s view of the whole city, which comes to be small when compared with the greatness of the Exile of the complex. The site was part of a farm known since memorable times, by a whitewashed house, the Farm White House (Casa Branca).

The so-called top of Boa Vista, The Colonel João Gonçalves dos Santos, decided to build a chapel, thus paying a promise to the Virgin Mary.

Similarly others reached grace through devotion to the Holy Mary and soon the chapel was small for so many devotees. Only in 1936 the building gained the present appearance
