ABOUT THE CITY

The discovery of the mineral spring in Ribeirao da Prata margin in 1876 by Rufino Luiz de Castro Gavião, that was hunting, from São João da Boa Vista, is attributed to chance. The hunter walked the lands of Alegre when he noticed the preference of wild animals by spring water, solving test it, was surprised by its quality. The event was reported and confirmed by others.

With the inauguration of the extension of Mogiana Railroad, linking Cascavel (today Aguaí) to Pocos de Caldas, in 1886, aroused the interest of farmers in the region to the railway shipment station in the valley bathed in Ribeirao das Prata (Stream of Silver) and Corrego da Platina (Stream Platinum), which began to build their homes near the station then being born a village.

In 1916 became the first hotel, and on the private initiative of its residents, was conducted chemical analysis of water sources, noting up their alkaline properties, similar to the sources of Vichy in France, getting Prata known by the nickname of the Brazilian Vichy.

The vocation to Hidromineral was consolidated when the chemical Geographical Department and State Geological researching the region, made prospecting sources, proving the viability of the economic exploitation of its mining.

It was created in 1913, a company for the purpose in question, causing arose hotels and all necessary infrastructure.

In 1925, the Águas da Prata (Silver Water District) of Peace was established in São João da Boa Vista. The Águas da Prata Hidromineral district was installed in December 1935, changing the place name only to Águas da Prata.
