The story of Aparecida began amid the gold cycle (1717) when the governor of São Paulo and Minas Gerais Province, Pedro de Almeida and Portugal (Earl of Assumar) announced that it would go towards Villa Rica, today Ouro Preto. The Count would make of the scales in Guaratingueta. Local fishermen were assigned to get fish for the meal count. Even with experienced fishermen, the time was not fish and the network was collected several times without success. Already far from Guaratingueta, near the port of Itaguaçu, fishermen collected the network again without fish, but this time the network had an image without head of Nossa Senhora da Conceição ( Our Lady Conception) and pulling the next network came the head of the saint; and from that time the fishing was abundant.
In 1734 a chapel was built on top of the Morro dos Coqueiros. A century later, the first basilica was built (now Old Basilica) and in 1928, the village had gathered around the shrine, became the city of Aparecida (Appeared), which for many is known as Aparecida do Norte (Appeard from North).
In 1929, by order of Pope Pius XI, Our Lady of Aparecida was declared the patron saint of Brazil
